Due to illness, I was forced to quit the work force and go on disability. In researching ways to help earn a little income, I decided to turn my love of sewing into a home alteration/mending business. I quickly found that I needed a serger sewing machine. My husband decided to give me one for my birthday. He researched many different machines and found the Brother Sewing Machine - Serger- 1034D. I loved it immediately. The threading color coded system makes it easy to thread. YOu just follow the pictures! It trims the fabric very smoothly. The stitches are straight and even. The Serger came with two DVDs that give very clear directions on how to use the machine. After I watched them a couple of times, it was easy to learn how to use the various stitches. Of course, the illustrated books that came with the machine help boost my memory at times also! In summary, I would never trade my Serger for another one. This works perfectly!

the Brother Sewing Machine - Serger - 1034D Serger is pretty nice machine.  i bought one this summer after my old reliable sewing machine finally stopped working for me.  Not sure what wrong with it, it just stopped mid-sew for no apparent reason.  Anyway i went to my local crafts store and the lady their helped me pick this one out.  She spoke very highly of it, and said that it was their best seller.  I can see why now.  It is so easy to use and set up.  My old one used to jam up quite a bit and i would have to back out and restart, but not this one.  It works so much more smoothly compared to my older now junk machine.  I wish i had bought a new one years ago.  I used it this halloween to sew my two daughters halloween custumes together and i think it got it done faster than i ever had in the past.  So if you are looking for a new machine, the Brother Sewing Machine - Serger - 1034D Serger definitely deserves  your consideration.

Comments about Brother Serger:

Any sewing/serger machine that is made by Brother is worth looking at. I have both the Brother Serger 1034D and the Brother PC420 sewing machine (better known as the Brother Project Runway Sewing Machine. They have both made learning to sew a breeze.
The Brother Serger 1034D has good points and bad points, but the good out weight the bad.
First the bad:
1. there is definitely a learning curve in learning to thread this thing. Not only do you have to thread it in a certain order, but the instructions are very lacking. Once I went on You Tube and watched a video, it became much easier though.
2. I hate that I have to re-thread the whole thing if only one thread snaps.
3. I have got my fabric stuck on the teeth the first week I had it and it broke something(but I was just learning how to use it)
4. changing the needles are not the easiest thing in the world to do.

good:
1. It is pretty simple to use once you get used to it.
2.you do not have to turn lots of dials, push lots of buttons to get the pressure right. It adjust itself to a point. There *are* dials if you need to change them though.
3. I only use 2 settings, but there are several to choose from
4. you can use REGULAR needles!!!!!
5. It is not picky on the thread cones that you use, quality or size.
6. it can take a beating. I use it constantly with all types of fabric, even fleece. I do not clean it or get it serviced as often as I should and it just keeps on going.

The finished product looks really nice. This may not be what you want if you are looking for a high end professional machine, but it has gotten me through learning to using for my small wahm business.

Stitch Performance
after you get used to the machine, it consistently makes good stitches

Ease of Use
other than re-threading it, it is very easy to use.

Fabric Handling
I have used it on light cottons to fleece with no problems. It cuts through at least 3 like butter.

Versatility
lots of options

Design
small, easy to move around, does not bounce all over the table though

Durability
mine has put up with a beating

Comments about Brother Serger:

I inherited one of these sewing machines from my late grandmother. It was one of her favorite sewing machines, and once she fired it up she would make amazing things with it. Once she passed away it became mine. It came with all the books on how to use it, but I still could never figure it out. A serger is a heavier duty kind of sewing machine that can handle up to 4 strands of thread at once. (Or even 8 of you want to be really crafty) It is not for beginners and is not for the younger generations. If you are looking into buying your craft loving daughter/son a sewing machine, this is not the one for them. This machine sews with a vengeance. it will keep seems sewn forever. I had a problem with this particular sewing machine, it is so "mean" and heavy duty that it was actually cutting thru my material. it would sew one side and cut the other side right off. That is how fast it moves. If you do not know what you are doing, choose another machine. If you want to learn to use a serger, I do not recommend this one for first timers. It is for the more advanced sewer.

Durability
The sewing machine itself is very touch.

Comments about Brother Serger:

I bought one of these used, and I have to say it took me a long time to figure out how to set it up. Lots of places to string the thread and such. If you are a new sewer I wouldn't recommend.

Stitch Performance
Worked really good.

Ease of Use
Hard getting it set up, and running. I am still a newer sewer - so if you know a lot might be easier for you.

Who needs a sewing machine when you have a serger?

Comments about Brother Serger:

I taught myself how to sew and this machine is awesome. My stitching and technique may not be as the professionals would call "great" but this machine gets it done. It's great for beginners but I'm sure more advance users would want more features and functionality. Threading typically is the challenge but the guides and numbers on this machine really helps.

This is a very good machine for quilters.  The serger function is also good for making pillowcases and the like.  I would definitely recommend this machine to anybody looking for a serger or any serious quilter.  This is a very good machine for quilters.  The serger function is also good for making pillowcases and the like.  I would definitely recommend this machine to anybody looking for a serger or any serious quilter.

Love,Love Love this machine!

Comments about Brother Serger:

I have never used a serger before. I was afraid because I had heard the horror stories about how hard it is to thread it. NOT SO! After watching the dvd and reading the instructions, it is a snap to use. I prefer it over my sewing machine. Threads have broken and I have had to re-thread it from scratch. Not nearly as difficult as I had imagined! I have only learned 2 stitches so far, but am ready to learn more! Great buy and easy to use!

This brother serger is a workhorse

Comments about Brother Serger:

After owning a sewing machine for several years I decided that I wanted to expand my sewing horizons and took the plunge and bought a serger so that I could make my projects a little more finished.  Without doing much research I first purchased a simplicity serger and quickly became frustrated with how difficult it was to thread.  After I returned that machine I did a lot of research and finally decided to give the Brother 1034 D serger a try.  It is so easy to thread and adjust the tension.  The trouble shooting guide is a very valuble resource for finding the appropriate settings.  This machine has no problem going through single layers of thin cloth or multiple layers of heavier material.  It is a real work horse.  I recently had to replace the blades and found that they were a bit more expensive than I had thought they would be but once they were installed the machine is like new again and I hope it will last many more years.

Great serger! Brother 1034D serger is the best for the price

Comments about Brother Serger:

I have had 2 Brother sergers over the last 15 years and I love them both. Yes there are better brands out there but they can cost an arm and a leg. I love Brother products and feel that you cannot go wrong with them. The take very little maintenence and are a heavy duty machine in my opinion. Both of my machines still work like a charm. I have 2 because was constantly changing out from black to white threads and the cost is reasonable so it paid for my time to just buy another one. They are a little tricky at times to change the needles but I haven't had to do that too many times over the years. There is nothing like having a serger when you sew a lot. The edges look like something store bought!

Comments about Brother Serger:

I have owned the Brother Serger for a year or so and find it very easy to use and a delight to sew with. I would recommend it to almost anyone. I did talke some lessons on it at the shop I bought it at. It made it even easier to use. The written material with it is good, but I think a lesson or two makes it easier.
