My doctor gave me this, and it provides comfort

4

Most people would know this by the OTC name of Tagamet. My doctor wrote me a script for this after we had tried many other things, and I had a good period of success with it. After about 6 months it became less effective, but that is not atypical for cases of severe GERD, according to my doctor. So giving this a try is worth it.

**Cimetidine Prescription 800 mg Tablets**,(also sold under the brand name **Tagamet**), is a prescription medication used to treat ulcers of the stomach and intestines, and to prevent them from coming back after they have healed. This medication is also used to treat certain stomach and esophagus problems that are caused when there is too much acid in your stomach. Also, when a backward flow of stomach acid into your esophagus (acid reflux disease/GERD) occurs, **Cimetidine **is used to treat it. **Cimetidine 800 mg** **Tablets** belong to a class of drugs commonly called H2 blockers.  It works by reducing the amount of acid in your stomach. **Cimetidine** was actually the very first drug specifically designed to block the acid producing cell in the stomach.  It has been found to be fairly safe for long-term use as well. Since the generic form is the least expensive way of controlling stomach acid, many physicians recommend this preparation for various stomach acid conditions when it proves to be effective. However, **Cimetidine **is only available without a prescription in lower doses. **800 mg** **Cimetidine Tablets **are only available when prescribed by a physician. **Cimetidine** can be effective in the following conditions: - Healing and prevention of peptic ulcers in the stomach or duodenum - Reflux of acid into the esophagus (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) - Hyperacidity - Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome - a rare condition where very large amounts of acid pour from the stomach. However, there are now much more effective medications for this condition - There are also many other "unlabeled" (not FDA approved) uses of **Cimetidine**.   I was actually prescribed this medication for one of the above mentioned *"many other "unlabeled" (not FDA approved) uses of **Cimetidine**."* I am taking one **800 mg Cimetidine Tablet **twice a day to treat my Mononucleosis, or as most people call it, "Mono". Mono is a virus  that makes you feel very tired and weak for many weeks or sometimes even months. Mono goes away on its own, but lots of rest and good self-care can help you feel better. Mono is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Mono can be spread through contact with saliva, mucus from the nose and throat, and sometimes tears. Because the virus can be spread through kissing, it has earned the nickname the "kissing disease." If you have mono, you can avoid passing the virus to others by not kissing anyone and by not sharing things like drinking glasses, eating utensils, or toothbrushes. The most common symptoms of mono are a high fever, a severe sore throat, swollen glands and tonsils, and weakness and fatigue. Symptoms usually start 4 to 6 weeks after you are exposed to the virus. Mono can cause the spleen to swell. Severe pain in the upper left part of your stomach may mean that your spleen has burst. This is an emergency. Mono can also cause liver damage that could eventually lead to Jaundice and Hepatitis A. **Mono and Hepatitis:** *"Hepatitis occurs in up to 90% of patients with infectious mononucleosis. Mono causes inflammation of the liver in approximately 1 out of every 10 people. Mono-related hepatitis is caused by the Epstein-Barr Virus which also causes mono. However, mono-related hepatitis is generally mild and only in rare cases does serious liver damage occur. When hepatitis is severe in individuals with mono, diagnosis should investigate a cause beyond mononucleosis. In rare instances where chronic hepatitis occurs because of infectious mononucleosis, it cannot be spread to an individual's spouse or offspring."* **Diagnosis of Hepatitis:** *"The diagnosis of hepatitis can be performed through a physical exam, which can check for such hepatitis symptoms as jaundice, an enlarged or tender liver or fluid in the abdomen (ascites). **In addition, laboratory tests may also be performed, including liver function tests. These tests include a variety of blood and urine tests, which evaluate damage incurred to the liver, as well as a liver biopsy, which also evaluates the severity of damage to the liver caused by hepatitis."* **Treatment:** *"There is currently no cure for hepatitis."* **How is mono diagnosed?** "Your doctor will ask you questions about your symptoms and examine you. You may also need blood tests to check for signs of mono (monospot test) and the Epstein-Barr viirus."  Sometimes the monospot test produces a false negative result. My doctor always gives me an Epstein-Barr blood test, which is the only certain way to know whether or not a person has an active case of mono. **How is it treated? ** "Get plenty of rest. You need bed rest, which will probably keep you away from school or work until your physician gives you written permission to return. Gargle with salt water or use throat lozenges to soothe your sore throat. Take ibuprofen (such as Advil) to reduce fever and relieve your sore throat and headaches. Avoid contact sports and heavy lifting. Your spleen may be enlarged, and impact or straining could cause it to burst." (My doctor has given me orders to not lift anything that weighs over 5 pounds until he tells me differently. In severe cases, medicines called corticosteroids may be used to reduce swelling of the throat, tonsils, or spleen. (I am currently taking prednisone for my severe case of mono. It's a corticosteroid). As I said, I also take one **800 mg Cimetidine Tablet **twice a day to treat my mono, along with taking six Thymic Formula Immune System boosting supplements, daily. My doctor explained to me that the FDA has not approved **Cimetidine **fot treating mono, but clinical tests have shown that it is helpful in treating mono. My doctor reads all of those medical journals, not me, so I do what he says. If you have ever had a really bad case of mono like mine, you would be willing to try any and everything to make it go away, too. Plus, I NEVER have heartburn anymore since I started taking 1600 mgs of **Cimetidine** every day.
