Good BASIC Machine

3

I have had my Singer 1120 for almost 10 years. This machine is great for light-weight sewing projects but not for heavier projects, because it cannot handle thread thicker than the general multi-purpose thread used for cotton projects. It actually shreds heavy-duty thread and tends to break needles on heavier projects regardless of size or age. When overworked or the tension is off or the sun and moon aren't aligned properly, the bobbin gets tangled up, breaking your needle again. It is however, great to travel with since it is so light. For a beginner or someone working on lighter projects, go for it! If you are an experienced seamstress, this machine will cause blinding fits of rage. Approach with patience and coffee.

I hate this machine

1

This sewing machine is just TERRIBLE! If it's not one problem, it's another. I hate it. Have never finished one project without an issue. Broken needle after broken needle, the bobbin constantly tangled then miraculously begins working then can't get through 2 stitches without tangling. My newest problem is that the top thread keeps breaking for no reason after 3 stitches. Ive had it- ive only had it 2 years and it's going straight to the trash. Just not worth the frustration. Many people have commented that singers made in the last 20 years are crap. Fabric Handling Don't try to stitch on more than one piece of thin cotton fabric!

Great Basic Sewing Machine!

5

This sewing machine was given to me while I was in college.  I have used it for several year now.  It is a great basic sewing machine.  It is super easy to use and does everything I need it to do. If you are looking for something fancy, this isn't for you.  If you are just wanting a good reliable machice to do basic stitches, this is it.  It does straight and zig-zag stitches, in a variety of widths and lengths.  They are easily adjusted but a turn of a dial. This machine is super easy to adjust and has never broken down on my, in that last ten years.  It is easy to clean and care for.  Bobbins and needles for this machine are easily found at your local Walmart.  If you ask me, this machine should be in every household.  Everyone should be able to hem their own pants or put a patch in a pair of jeans.  I certainly have down both as well as put quilts together with this machine.  Really, you should go out and buy this machine.

The singer 1120 is by far the worse machine I have ever owned!

Every time I have sewing to do it is one problem after another. I love to sew and have sewed since before I married  50 years ago, and I have never had such a bad time as I do when I use my Singer 1120. Singer has lost me, will never own another one.

great starter machine

I'm not a great sewer.  I wanted a machine to try to learn.  I bought my Singer1120 Sewing Machine on sale and took it home to give it a whirl.  After a few peices of practice fabric testing all the stitches I bought a pattern and some fabric and made pajama pants.  Though I had issues with my actual skill level, the machine was great.  I've heard about people breaking lots of needles, sewing their fingers, and ripping fabric while sewing but I had none of those problems.  It's several years, and several projects later and I still have a working sewing machine.  I have needed to clean it out a little, oil it a few times, and change a few needles and bobbins.  It's been a quality machine.  I still use it a few times a year for random projects.  My only criticisms are in the threading of the machine and the booklet that comes with it.  Threading is difficult and the booklet explains very little.  Learning the machine was mostly trial and error for me.  My biggest problem is that I have never been able to successfully make a button hole.  Might be operator error though.

My Singer Sewing Machine is awesome!

5

I am not a master of sewing by any means. I can do the basics; pillows, curtains, etc. This Singer sewing machine is fantastic for those types of projects. And also perfect for me, as a novice at sewing, because the machine is so easy to use. The buttons and knobs are easy to set and understand. I haven't had any problems with it breaking down or anything. I had to use the directions to thread the machine but even those were very clear and easy to understand. I haven't even had needles break when I'm using it. It has  storage container which I thought was awesome because who doesn't love extra storage?! The light on the machine does get very hot, but that's not any different from any other machine. My brother-in-law has borrowed this machine a number of times and mentioned how much he likes it too. I figure  if I ever wanted to buy a sewing machine for anyone I would probably end up getting them this Singer.

Plug in, thread needle, sew!

I am in love with my new Singer 1120 sewing machine. I have found in very easy to use. The instruction book that comes with it is simple to follow and covers a wide range of sewing situations. This machine is great for beginners like me. I was able to start in minutes and made my first simple project, a lunch bag, the first night. The price point was perfect for an entry level machine as well. The Singer 1120 comes from the box ready to go. You only need to fill a bobbin and thread the machine. The tension settings are preset.I did find the automatic threader difficult to understand and use. Since I had never seen one before, I couldn't even locate it easily. I have now mastered the auto-threader, but the lever for it has gotten stuck once. I still thread the needle by hand most of the time by habit. The stitch selection is very basic. There are three variables, stitch length, stitch width, and stitch shape. I have had no trouble adjusting these to suit my projects. The manual has a basic guide to selecting which setting to use. So far the stitch quality has been great. The stitches are even in size and tension. This machine is very small. I have found this to be frustrating on big projects or on heavy fabrics because there is not much room under the arm. The machine does not seem to support large cones of thread. The horizontal spool pin is very short, and the cutout it is in is not very big. However, the small footprint of the machine makes it perfect for my small workspace, and the machine is very light.I am not convinced that the construction of the machine is very durable. The automatic threader has already stuck once. There is a 25yr limited warranty. For this price, I am quite pleased with what I have. I would recommend this sewing machine to crafters and first time owners. I would not recommend this machine to quilters.
